With temperatures  dropping below 30c and the haze of humidity and dust disappearing, the conditions were just right for a leisurely exploration of part of Oman’s mountainous ‘backcountry’. Since Oman is still celebrating National Day and, with the holiday for it still to come, many buildings, like this tower perched on a rocky outcrop, are decorated in Oman’s Flag. Obviously it needed a bit of effort to clamber up the rock and up to the tower to fix the flag, we simply admired it from a distance.

For all our steady pace it was a question of fast reactions as a steam of cyclists zoomed past us. A mix of Omani and expat residents – the morning ‘spin’ still left this young man with energy to smile for the camera.
